Speaker: Betsy Butler, Course Creator

What do you hope teachers will take away from this course?

Betsy Butler: Hi, I'm Betsy Butler and I'm the course creator for course 5531, which is about refreshing your grammar instruction. And I know a lot of people out there don't like teaching grammar. I didn't either. This is a great course to give you kind of some new ideas and some other ways to engage your students in something that used to be about diagramming sentences on the board or somehow extrapolating different parts of speech. While those things are still important, parts of speech, punctuation, et cetera. We don't have to make them a dry and ugly lesson that kids feel like they're dragged through. It's better to really teach grammar from a perspective of holistically. And so as the students are reading through and, and engaging with materials, they'll be able to identify different parts of grammar that you can then do explicit instruction of when they come across it.

What do you love about this course?

Betsy Butler: This course does not just rely on the whole same, same old, same old when it comes to grammar instruction. There's so many really cool ways to attack this in terms of allowing students to really understand it. And I think that this is just the perfect course to really restart and rejuvenate the way that you see teaching grammar. It really doesn't have to be a chore and it really can be fun for students. And personally, I had a ton of memes and images in this course that I just couldn't include enough because there's tons out there on grammar instruction. You can be the creator of some of those memes moving forward as you find more and more success with this course.
