What do you hope teachers will take away from this course?
Julie Kuntz: Hi, my name is Julie Kuntz and I'm one of the course designers for the course 5330: Beyond the Book: Creating a Comprehensive Unit for Stamped. I am very excited to be sharing this new course format with all of you. Beyond the Book is a new course series that provides tools, resources and application for teachers to teach a young adult or young readers edition of a text. This debut course of Beyond. the Book is all about this incredible book called 'Stamped: Racism, Anti-Racism, and You' by Ibram X. Kendi and Jason Reynolds. And the course provides plenty of resources and applications and ideas for how to teach this unit and how to talk about it with students. I'm hoping that teachers take away from this course, a complete unit of study that they are able to take directly from the course and implement right into their classrooms.
What do you love about this course?
Julie Kuntz: Something I love about this course is that teachers can take their applications and use them in their classrooms to implement a new unit of study for teaching 'Stamped.' I think a lot of teachers want to create innovative instruction, but oftentimes lack the time and the space to be able to do that. This course seeks to provide and craft out that time for teachers while simultaneously providing professional development. The other thing I love about this course is that the tools and resources, the ideas for formative and summative assessments woven throughout the course are things that you can implement in your class beyond just teaching 'Stamped' as a unit of study. These are universal ideas, fun ways to invigorate your instruction when it comes to vocabulary, writing, comprehension and critical thinking. And I'm hoping that teachers can utilize these far beyond a single unit of study in their class.
