Speakers: Gavin Campbell
Gavin Campbell: Hi, I'm Gavin Campbell. I'm a Professor of History and Religious Studies at a university here in Kyoto, where I've been working for the last 20 years. I've also been a Context tour guide now for over a decade – exploring with you the magic of the city's religious sites, shrines and temples, the beauty of its gardens, and the allure of its geisha culture. As an academic, I'm really interested in Japan's encounters with the Western world – particularly in the period from 1600 to the 1930s. And as a matter of fact, I'm finishing up work on a book right now on the History of Japanese Fashion and its global encounters.
What will we learn during your upcoming seminars featuring the history of Kyoto, Japan?
Gavin Campbell: In this tour, we take eight of Kyoto's UNESCO World Heritage Sites and use them as fascinating lens to explore Japanese history, politics, religion and aesthetics.
Gavin Campbell: I'm really excited to have you join us on this journey. We're going to meet some extraordinary people and see some amazing sights. And through those people and sites, we're going to explore the rich tapestry that is traditional Japanese culture.
