How has your journey been as a practice owner? What's been your biggest challenge?
Crystal Hopkins: My journey to private practice has been a very long one. I spend a lot of time working for others and making them money. However, I was finally confident enough in myself and my talents to be able to step out on my own and actually open up my own practice. I have provided care for a myriad of different patients to include a high intensity psych outpatient mental health, substance abuse treatment disorders, as well as post traumatic stress disorders. I have been a big change maker in the exploration of mental health illnesses. And so that is my goal to provide that for all of my patients. My biggest challenge for starting my own practice is this actually getting the confidence to do it. Once I've overcome that I was able to finally get on track and open my own practice.
What piece of advice do you have to future NP/PA entrepreneurs?
Crystal Hopkins: My biggest advice to any nurse practitioner that is ready to open their own practice is just to be confident you have the capability, you have the preparation. Just please rely on yourself and your family or your support system and know that you can do this. It took a very long time for me to realize um how great my talents are. So please don't wait around like I did and go and get whatever it is that you desire, you want to do, especially if it is giving compassionate care as a nurse practitioner in your own private practice, you can do it. You absolutely can do it.
Tell us about your experience using Collaborating Docs for your collaborating physician:
Crystal Hopkins: My experience with working with collaborative docs to find a collaborative physician was very simple. I was contacted and we scheduled an appointment with a representative, that person was able to gather more information on my particular needs. And within a week, they had me paired with a very knowledgeable and experienced provider and position. My collaborative physician has been open and honest with me and she and I maintain of course, our report as well as we're able to speak and I have a personal cell phone. So if I ever have any issues or questions, I am able to contact her immediately. So you will always have backup as far as seeing your patients and any issues that may arise. So I would absolutely and positively recommend collaborating docs.
