Speaker: Ernice Brown
What inspired you to become part of SAAEF?
Ernice Brown: Greetings from Milwaukee, Wisconsin. COABE's commitment to literacy for all is what motivated me to become a fellow. I found their goals to be in alignment with my own personal values, and I so appreciate the opportunity to have served as a fellow.
What were your biggest accomplishments during your SAAEF fellowship?
Ernice Brown: My biggest accomplishment as a fellow was establishing a stellar dynamic team for the state of Wisconsin. They showed up, they were positive and moved from just being me to we. I cannot speak enough about how much value having those essential team members meant. They were with me when I went to Capitol Hill. I could call and say, Hey Jake, I need information. Dr. Konruff they're asking this, as I want to meet with the senators and congresswoman and all those different people, I didn't feel alone. I felt empowered. I felt educated and prepared. Thank you so much team Wisconsin for seeing this. Thank you.
What would you like to say to someone in the field who is unsure if they have what it takes to be an advocate?
Ernice Brown: Hello, fellow advocates. My encouragement is to let whatever you're sure about, outweigh what you're unsure about. By this, I mean no matter what role you play, you're fueled by whatever you're experiencing that is causing low literacy. In my case, it is working with men who are not at a 3rd grade level in terms of reading and you need a 9th grade level to participate in the GED program. I was infuriated and what I could keep doing is going to the donut shop, sitting around talking about it, but that's not going to get much done. This advocacy gave me a chance to actively go out and try to promote change. Your fire will come from what you are experiencing in your daily walk. That will outweigh all, outweigh all of you, the uncertainties, everything you're unsure about. I can tell you this because I've walked the walk that you're walking, and I will tell you I will never feel unsure because countless people come into the Milwaukee County jail without the literacy levels that they need to move forward. So again, let what you're sure about be your motivation.
