What inspired you to become part of SAAEF?

Ginger Narum from the state of Idaho. I was inspired to join SAAEF because our leadership team had been discussing the goal of raising awareness of our program for a mission statement.

Becoming a fellow would help propel this goal forward. The western region needs national representation. Since Idaho lacks a state association, it was especially important that someone step up. I embrace the challenge to step outside of my comfort zone and learn new techniques and strategies for promoting adult education. My most significant achievement during the fellowship occurred during Adult Education and Family Literacy Week. Following proclamations from two county commissions and two city councils in our service area, Idaho Governor Brad Little signed a statewide proclamation for AEFL Week, then hosted state-level staff and representatives from programs around the area to honor. Idaho ABE Teacher of the Year and Idaho ABE Student of the Year. It was an awesome celebration. The Idaho state director has credited these advocacy efforts with securing a strong position for adult education within the Department of Career Technical Education, this recognition can significantly advance funding discussions with state legislators. I witnessed the profound impact of students sharing their success stories at the Cassia County meeting. The county commissioners were captivated and inspired by a local hero's account of how obtaining his GED transformed his self-confidence, career opportunities, and professional trajectory. For those uncertain about assuming the role of state advocate, it is important to know that very few people feel confident at the beginning. Rest assured, COABE will provide support, training, and break down tasks into manageable steps. This commitment will help you dedicate time to an initiative that is not only a valuable idea but potentially transformative for your program and your state. Despite being a single individual in this sparsely populated yet vast state of Idaho, I received support and recognition from program directors across the state. It's crucial to spark action and involvement statewide. You can build on the momentum established by previous fellows, bringing your unique skill set to the role and making it your own. Go for it. Do what resonates with you.
