Speaker: Amber Beck
What inspired you to become part of SAAEF?
Amber Beck: What inspired me to become part of SAAEF was the opportunity to grow my voice. Over the past 3 years working in adult education, I've witnessed firsthand how obtaining a high school equivalency diploma can change lives. Education is the key for individual growth and community progress, and I am passionate about advocating for policies that expand access to quality adult education programs. SAAEF offers the perfect opportunity to amplify my efforts, learn how to collaborate with policy makers and advocate for adult education on a larger scale.
What were your biggest accomplishments during your SAAEF fellowship?
Amber Beck: I would have to say one of my most significant accomplishments during my time in the SAAEF Fellowship was organizing activities for AEFL Week. I used a grassroots approach to engage my community and raise awareness about the importance of adult education. I worked closely with adult learners, educators, and community members to organize events. During these events, I connected directly with legislators. Another accomplishment, I had the opportunity to communicate directly with lawmakers advocating for policies that would positively impact adult education. This helped move the needle on the conversation around adult education in Mississippi. These experiences helped me take my advocacy skills to the next level and taught me the importance of organizing at both the local and the state levels.
What would you like to say to someone in the field who is unsure if they have what it takes to be an advocate?
Amber Beck: If you're unsure whether you have what it takes to advocate, I would say you absolutely do. If I can do it, you can too. Advocacy isn't about being an expert in everything, it's about being passionate, willing to learn and committed to the cause. You don't need to have all the answers. You just need the courage to speak up and to share your story. Advocacy is about amplifying the voices of those who need to be heard. Your voice matters and it makes a difference.
