Speaker: LaDerrington, Lifeskills Teacher & Charles Butt Scholar Alum

What do you love most about teaching?

LaDerrington: When you're out and about and you see previous students that you have taught before or ones that you have touched the lives of, and you know, it's so inspiring to hear them say, "Oh, I remember you, you were my math teacher, you were my science teacher. Oh, you helped me so much." And you know, just for them to remember those little things that happened in the classroom is so inspiring.

What does the Charles Butt Scholarship mean to you?

LaDerrington: When I was blessed with this Charles Butt Scholarship, I was able to get the scholarship towards the end of my sophomore year. And you know, I remember talking to some of my supervisors when I was a student worker at Sam Houston State University. And I remember them telling me, "Hey LB, you should, you know, apply for some more scholarships because a lot of times some of that money just goes unclaimed." And I said, "You know what, that's not a bad idea. I should, you know, apply." You know, me thinking like, "Well, you know, I'm in my sophomore year, you know, maybe I'll get the opportunity to get a scholarship or maybe not, but hey, you know what, at least I tried." And sure enough, I tried, I applied for the Charles Butt Scholarship. I went through the interview process and I received the scholarship. I was able, I was given the opportunity to receive this scholarship. And one thing about it is, you know, being able to be blessed with this opportunity. I like to help others also get the opportunity that I had. So anytime I see ones that want to be a teacher or going into the teaching field, I always say, "Oh, what university are you going to?" Have you looked at the Charles Butt Scholarship? You don't see if they're networking with your university, and if so, you need to apply for that scholarship because it is an amazing opportunity.

What would you tell a prospective applicant about the Charles Butt Scholarship?

LaDerrington: What are you waiting on? Apply. You should apply, because it is an amazing opportunity for networking, for you to learn different teaching strategies in the classroom, for you to hear about others' experience. You know, these are some things that we don't get the opportunity to really have when we do just our regular teaching trainings. At schools, you know, being an applicant of the Charles Butt Scholarship, you're open to so many opportunities of networking. You know, being able to find out about other school districts, being able to see how they, you know, do their curriculum and, you know, the everything that they are able to follow along with. And I think it's just an amazing opportunity. Again, you know, this is an eye opener and a door opener for many. You know, I would say apply, apply, apply.
