What's the biggest reason that the #firstgen identity matters to you?
I'm super excited, as we celebrate national First-Generation College Celebration day, to be representing my alma mater, the University of Maryland at College Park. It's a place, unfortunately, from which I thought I wouldn't be able to graduate. It actually took me a while to navigate my way through the system as a first-generation college student. So, when I celebrate the first-gen identity, I also celebrate the family and the community that supported me, because my graduation was truly an accomplishment for my entire community. So, let's give a little shout out to baby LT...
Why is it important to #CelebrateFirstGen?
La'Tonya "LT" Rease Miles: Hey, everyone. I'm here with my man Finn and my man Jaime (aka Blue Beetle), and the three of us all know what it's like to be the first in our families to accomplish certain goals and to create new pathways for ourselves. These are the main reasons why we want to #CelebrateFirstGen. It's not just about the struggle and the hardships-that might be part of the story, but that's certainly not the whole story, right? It's really about creating a new legacy for yourself and imagining yourself in the future. That's the main reason that I want to celebrate national First-Generation College Celebration day.
