Speaker: Ayleen Gonzalez

In 30 seconds or less, say your name, where in Florida you live, and how you’ve been impacted by high electricity bills.

Ayleen Gonzalez: My name is Ayleen Gonzalez and I used to live right by the Miami International Airport and my light bill was ok. It was pretty decent. And then later towards the end of the year, I ended up paying $934 for my light bill. I moved to Florida City because the cost of living in Miami was no longer affordable for both rent and utilities. And although Florida City is in fact cheaper because the population is obviously a lot smaller. I went from paying 200 something dollars a month for light. And now I'm paying almost $400 a month for light bill. This has been an extreme inconvenience because everything has gone up for inflation but salaries don't go up just as quick. It has been very inconvenient because now I have more people living in my home for like to be able to split utilities and like the cost of living. And that's all.

What do you want to say to the utility corporations and Florida’s politicians who are responsible?

Ayleen Gonzalez: I would love for them to answer me back. I've written emails to our commissioner. I've sent messages through Facebook. I vote. I'm an active voter. I would love for them to reply and be proactive and give us whatever it is that they promise us when we are voting and I would love for it to be affordable. I would love for us to be able to make ends meet while still being, being able to do like family activities and, you know, be able to live, travel, eat. I would love for them to be proactive and give us exactly what they promised us.
