Speaker: Augusta I., Denver, CO

Augusta I.: My name is Augusta and I am from Denver, Colorado.

Why did you first look for advice on CareerVillage?

Augusta I.: I first utilized CareerVillage when I was in high school and I was thinking about the next steps of going to college. I had one advisor and that one adviser was assigned multiple students. She was great about giving me, you know, a lot of advice from about different areas. But then I had specific questions about the pros and cons of going to an all women's college, or an HBCU the pros and cons of going to an all women's college, or an HBCU, going out of state vs. staying in state, going private vs. going to a public university and just things of that nature, that would be great to hear people's experiences and what they considered as well. experiences and what they considered as well. I didn't have a lot of people in my inner circle who had already went to college. And so I needed more people, more information and just kind of more viewpoints so that I felt like I could make a more informed decision.

What was the most important piece of advice you received on CareerVillage?

Augusta I.: One of the best words of wisdom I received from CareerVillage was that failing is one's first attempt in learning. I had received this response after asking the question, how did previous college students get over failing a class for the first time? I was kind of going through a tough time in terms of, I wasn't doing as good in my classes, my first year classes as I was in high school and I just thought, "oh, maybe, STEM isn't for me." "oh, maybe, STEM isn't for me." "oh, maybe, STEM isn't for me." I heard a lot of great advice in terms of practical things to do, but that advice changed my mindset in terms of how I viewed learning and how I viewed getting the grade that I got. It kind of showed me, "Hey, I don't know this subject as much and it's my attempt in learning and the more I put in the work to understand the material, the better grade I will get." And so it kind of shift in my mindset. And it's something that I took with me throughout the different classes I took at my university, as well as you know, where I'm at today in life.

How has CareerVillage influenced your career path?

Augusta I.: CareerVillage empowered me to embrace opportunities and to continue pursuing my interests. Throughout my time at university, I tried out a lot of different things that I was interested in and when it comes to the career that I picked that I'm going into, it's something that I really didn't expect or know about probably in the first four or five years of my time at university.

Where are you today in your career journey?

Augusta I.: Currently, in my career journey, I am about to start my first professional position post graduation, so I'm pretty excited about that. I am studying for the GRE in hopes to attend grad school in the next couple of years. attend grad school in the next couple of years.
