Speaker: Elsa Muratalla, Program Supervisor, Healthy Families Yolo County, YCCA
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your current role.
Elsa Muratalla: I'll start off by of course, introducing myself. My name is Elsa Muratalla. I am one of the program supervisors for our agency.
Elsa Muratalla: What do I do for program supervisor? I supervise six home visitors, amazing home visitors, I'll add. They go out into the field and work directly with clients. It's been a transition for that as well since we had COVID happening. So I think that also played into everything that I took from this (ELDP) program to help me lead that transition effectively.
How are you using what you’ve learned in your everyday work with families and/or within your organization?
Elsa Muratalla: So a couple of things that you guys should know is that I got promoted from within. So a lot of the peers that I am now supervising or a lot of the home visitors that I'm now supervising were once my peers. So that made it very difficult to kind of go away from being a friend to now being a leader. I definitely did take a lot of, of work and you know, I think the using the Effective Feedback Framework really helped me. That was one of the things that I took from this (ELDP) and I just took it and ran. I feel like once I learned it, I was like, I'm never stopping this. So that was, that was really, really great. I also implemented the Grow Model and Leading Through Change, but I will still stick to the Effective Feedback. Having those crucial conversations
Tell us about any specific success, improvement, or change your participation in CalTrin training helped you achieve.
Elsa Muratalla: This was by far another thing that I will forever implement is learning how my team works, how they learn. Realizing that not everyone has the same approach, not everybody works the same way, not everybody learns the same way. I think I went into this role as an achiever. That's another thing I learned about myself that I just, you know, I'm, I'm an achiever. So, my frustrations and stuff that came with having, you know, being an achiever was sometimes reflecting on the way that I communicated with my team, and realizing that they don't have the same strengths that I do. And learning how to work to best, you know, fit the way that they learn has also effectively impacted the communication I have with my team.
Would you recommend your colleagues or other family-serving professionals participate in CalTrin training?
Elsa Muratalla: Have I or will I recommend CalTrin, yes, 110%. I feel that not only has this (ELDP) program changed the way that I look at things in my agency. I think it just reframed everything that I think about leadership. How it's OK to not know everything, and how Jessica (Mattly) normalized so much for me. How it's, it's ok to not have the answer to everything. And I think going into a leadership position, you do put this huge burden on yourself to just know everything. But realizing that this is all a learning curve, you know, you, you trial and error. Sometimes things work out, sometimes you need to try them a few times.
Is there anything else you would like to share with us?
Elsa Muratalla: I truly believe that I was blessed to join this program and not just a program, but meet someone like Jessica. I feel like she will forever be a, a mentor for me and huge role model. She's amazing. Like I said, she's super engaging. and fun. I feel like there was not one session that I didn't take something out of it; and just her personality. So I thank Jessica and CalTrin so much for this experience, and I look forward to many more trainings. And just thank you for everything.
