Brittney McWilliams, O.D.: Hi, my name's Brittney McWilliams. I serve on the AOA Coding and Reimbursement Committee. I initially got involved with billing and coding after opening my office and deciding and determining that I didn't really know, sitting in the exam lane, what I was actually getting paid for or how I was getting paid for it. I didn't have any billing company, so I kind of just self-taught my way through learning bits and pieces along the way, and I discovered that it was something I was really interested in. I like the maybe the gray area of it a little bit. There's always one answer and someone might have a different answer, but it's always nice to kind of chat among colleagues and see, what makes the most sense given the guidance that is available to us. The work that we do on the committee, one of my favorite things is the Ask the Coding Experts email. So on the AOA.org website, you can go and click on the button to Ask the Coding Experts We get an email and then a couple of us on the committee will work together to formulate the best response to that question. Of course there's always regional and different differences that can come up in billing, but it is always nice to be able to interact with the AOA members and their staff to get those billing questions answered.
