Speaker: Mary K. Mulcahey, MD FAAOS, Moderator Career Dev. 7 - Leadership in Orthopaedics: How to be Your Own COO
Mary K. Mulcahey, MD FAAOS: Hi everyone. I'm Mary Mulcahey, a sports medicine surgeon at Tulane in New Orleans. I have the pleasure of moderating the career development session, Leadership in Orthopaedics: How to be Your Own Chief Operations Officer Whether Leading in the Operating Room or Orchestrating from the Podium at AAOS AAOS in Las Vegas in March with Drs. Karen Sutton, Asheesh Bedi, and Matt Provencher.
Mary K. Mulcahey, MD FAAOS: Our session will provide a detailed overview of how to lead effectively in the OR in the OR and the outpatient clinic setting, as well as leadership skills that are important in planning a course or large meeting and harnessing the strength of the team for committee work. This will be an engaging session with real scenarios and ample time for question and answer with the panel.
Mary K. Mulcahey, MD FAAOS: As orthopaedic surgeons, we are all leaders in the operating room and clinic settings. Unfortunately, formal leadership training is not built into our medical education and orthopaedic surgery training. Bearing that in mind, this career development session is very applicable to all practicing orthopaedic surgeons, as well as medical students, residents and fellows.
Mary K. Mulcahey, MD FAAOS: By attending this session, we hope that attendees will be able to discuss how to be an effective orthopaedic surgeon as a leader in the operating room and outpatient setting, to understand the necessary leadership skills and overall process for organizing an orthopaedic course, and to demonstrate where leadership traits benefit surgeons, including confidence, emotional intelligence, integrity, motivation, intuition, visionary, engaging, focus and inspiring.
Mary K. Mulcahey, MD FAAOS: We encourage surgeons from all orthopaedic subspecialties, as well as medical students, residents and fellows at the Academy, to consider attending, as this will provide helpful advice on how to be an effective leader in multiple facets of our careers as orthopaedic surgeons.
Mary K. Mulcahey, MD FAAOS: At the Academy, I'm most looking forward to reconnecting with my colleagues, meeting new people and attending excellent educational sessions.
Mary K. Mulcahey, MD FAAOS: I'm looking forward to seeing many of you at the AAOS in March. Have a great meeting and definitely take advantage of all the Academy has to offer.
