Speaker: Larry Myers, Ops manager
Tell us about your career with All My Sons. Where did you start and how have you grown professionally?
Larry Myers: Hi, my name is Larry Myers. I am the operations manager of all my sons, moving in storage in Greenville, South Carolina. I've been with the company since 2013. I started out on the trucks as a helper. Then quickly moved up to be a driver. I worked on the trucks for a while as a driver and then eventually got promoted at the end of uh 2013, beginning of 2014 as a sales manager in the local office, I got to work sales there and really learned the company as I kept progressing in my country. About a year and a half later, I uh became a hybrid position where I was doing operations and sales at the same time, did that for a few years and then I became a full pledged assistant operations manager. Uh again, did it for a few more years. And then in 2019, 2020 I got promoted to uh a roaming operations manager. And what that means is I got to travel the country, training and developing offices, teaching them the hiring and things like that and really growing and to work with our people on a national level. Um At the beginning of 2023 I was asked to take over the Greenville office. I came here and since coming here, we've been able to grow and develop this office and we've been doing really well here in Greenville. Um The biggest thing I can tell you about anybody looking to join the, all my son's family is the time and effort that you put into it. You see the ro I on your return, right? It's about investing in yourself. And this company really wants to invest in yourself, wants to invest in you me and to see us grow. I'm not the example. I'm one of many, many, many stories. So welcome to all my sons and best of luck to you on your journey.
In your opinion, what sets our company culture apart, and how has this culture supported your growth and development?
Larry Myers: Our company, all my sons moving in storage. It's set apart from so many other companies I worked for simply on the fact that it's driven, driven to force you to grow and develop. It's a winning culture all the time where you're wanting to, you're encouraged and you're wanting to just constantly grow and develop. Um And there's people around us that will help you grow and get to that next level. It's all about the effort and drive that you put into it. And I love so much about that is, it's a, a company of uh competition, a company of uh of empowerment. And we, we just work together to grow and, and we push each other to be the best that we can be stone sharpened stone. That's all my sons.
In what ways have our training and development opportunities helped you accel?
Larry Myers: All my sons has a lot of training that goes just beyond the initial hiring training, the the training that we get, the supplemental training from our safety team, the supplemental training we get from our uh field managers and, and things like that definitely help us out. But more importantly that the training we get from each other, you know, as you grow and develop with all my sons, we work together as a team uh to help one another be successful. We want every office to succeed and we're gonna push and stride to support each office in our company. So training is very important, but training is ongoing and that's one thing that all my sons doesn't shy away from. It's constantly changing, constantly developing, constantly bringing out new things to make us better as a company. And um that's what's great about the development that we get here is just we constantly get to uh develop ourselves and grow with this company. So.
Is there anyone who you consider a mentor? How has this person helped shape your career?
Larry Myers: Mentors and all my sons. I I is definitely a vital part because there's so many great people in this company that, that can help you and they want to see you be successful. You know, I've got several people that I look to for advice on a regular basis. I've got colleagues and peers that I call on a regular basis and we talk out our problems in our offices and, and we, we come up with solutions that will benefit not only our office, but the company, you know, one of the, one of my mentors is uh Chris Regan, he's our director of driver recruiting and he was my first operations manager. When I started with the company. He pushed me to grow and to get out of my comfort zones and help develop and mold me to the operator that I am today. Um could not be here without him. Um But he definitely got on my nerves from time to time, but the guy pushed me to be better than what I was and that's what's most important, you know, and a lot of company innovations comes from that, that, that mentor, mentor uh status I remember when I was a roamer, uh traveling the country, you know, we traveled during COVID, he was doing the recruiting. I was doing uh helping offices and stuff and we were talking on the phone one night and, you know, we were like, man, it's really annoying every time you go into a restaurant now they give you a QR code and they tell you to scan out for the menu and then we're like, you know, that would really help out with recruiting, you know, when the guys come in, they just scan the QR code, there's the application. So having that relationship where we were talking and we were developing, we came up with something that actually revolutionized our company as far as our hiring process with the QR Codes. Another great mentor of mine is Joel Rom, one of our field vice presidents, Joel Ro was the guy that recruited me into doing the uh roaming operations. And, you know, for years, I was in little old Greenville, South Carolina growing and developing in that office. And you know, it's, it's easy to think, you know, well, this is our office, every office must be like that. But as I traveled, I realized every office is slightly different, the culture is different, the people are different things like that. And Joel Rom was crucial for me and developed me to understand the, the the the bigger culture, the the company culture as a whole. He helped me grow and develop and, and fine tune uh my knowledge and everything like that. And my experience is to make me a better operator, to make me a better leader, right? All my sons want leaders, they don't want bosses, they don't want uh people that are just there for the ride, they want people that are willing to lead and they want to see growth and that want to see growth in other people, right? That's what a good mentor does. And mentors that I've gained here at all. My sons have been crucial in my development and have helped me to become a better leader uh both at work and outside of work.
Reflecting on your journey, what advice would you give to someone that is starting out where you did and aspires of reaching the next level.
Larry Myers: Grow, develop yourself. That's how you're gonna be successful in business, how you're gonna be successful in life. But more importantly, this company nurtures that growth.
Anything else you’d like to add or mention?
Larry Myers: Remember any journey worth going on is never gonna be easy, right? And if it's an easy path, it's probably not the journey you wanna be on to be uh better and to grow and develop. So enjoy the journey, but realize it's not meant to be easy.
