Speaker: Melissa, Affect Member
Melissa: If it wasn't for Affect, I would not be here today. So thank you to Affect.
What made you decide to join Affect?
Melissa: Hi. So my story is that I was in a very bad domestic violence situation and in order to get through the pain and just, the horrors that I felt about myself, I decided to seek help. I had gone and talked to multiple therapists and counselors and tried different programs, but none of the programs worked for me. In January of this year, I tried to commit suicide. I had gotten drunk out of my mind, and decided that I was going to try to kill myself. If it wasn't for Affect and then me showing interest in them and them reaching out to me. I wouldn't be where I am today. They were there for me when I needed them. I have accomplished so many things. after becoming sober. The counselors are amazing. They listen to you, they don't judge you. The groups are amazing because you get in there and you realize that you're not alone in this. There's others that are right there with you to support you. You support them, they support you, it's like one huge family. But I will reiterate. If it wasn't for Affect. I would not be here today. So thank you to Affect.
How has your life improved since you joined Affect?
Melissa: After joining Affect, I started to show huge improvements in my life, um. I bought a brand new car. I was able to save money up to make sure my kids had everything that they needed, um, extracurricular activities, it's just, I've seen a huge improvement since I joined Affect.
What has been your favorite part of working with Affect?
Melissa: My favorite part of working with Affect would be the groups. The one on one is great with the counselor, but the groups were definitely my favorite part because I was able to talk to people who were going through the same struggles as I was, and it made me feel like I wasn't alone. I wasn't alone with what I was going through, and the support of all the people around you is just absolutely amazing.
What advice would you give to someone considering getting treatment?
Melissa: The advice that I would give someone who is considering treatment would be to definitely do it. Um, it's extremely scary at the beginning, because you feel like you're going to be judged. You feel like you're alone and that no matter what help you try to seek out, that you're gonna fail. You're not gonna fail. The one thing about life is, you're gonna fail at many things, but it's how you go through it. That makes you succeed.
