Speaker: Rachel
Introduce yourself!
Rachel : Hi, I'm Rachel and I'm born and raised in Texas. I am an interior designer so I help people shape the spaces where they live and work. I also work a job with a flexible schedule which gives me time to volunteer, which is very important to me and to spend time with family and friends.
When thinking about the future, what type of relationship do you hope to have with your child's birth family?
Rachel : I don't know exactly what my relationship with the birth family will look like right now. But I do think it's important for the child to have some sort of connection with their birth family if possible. So it might take the form of photos or phone calls, video calls, even some visits just depends on the situation and what's best for the child. It might even evolve over time and that's perfectly fine.
What one word describes your family best? Why?
Rachel : One word that would describe my family is authentic. Everyone can be themselves, have their own interests and express their own ideas. Even when I was growing up, I was allowed to voice my opinions and have my own thoughts. So I want to keep that going with my child and make sure that they can be who they are and not worry about being judged or constricted in any way.
What makes your family stand out?
Rachel : There are a lot of things that make my family different from other families. However few would be our desire to help other people. I also like to travel and that's a huge passion of mine. One of the biggest things would be that I am an amputee and I went through a lot of challenges when I was a child. Now I'm perfectly fine, perfectly capable, but it helped me grow and it also helped our family grow closer through all those challenges.
