Speaker: Joseph Zuckerman, MD FAAOS, Moderator, ICL 442: Nutrition Interventions to Improve Outcomes

Joseph Zuckerman, MD FAAOS: Hello, this is Joe Zuckerman at NYU Langone Orthopaedics. I'm here to spend a few minutes talking to you about Instructional Course Lecture 442, which is Nutritional Optimization to Improve the Outcomes of the Orthopaedic Surgery that we perform.

Joseph Zuckerman, MD FAAOS: This Instructional Course Lecture will focus on nutritional optimization. This is an area that, as orthopaedic surgeons, we probably have not paid near as much attention to as we should. We tend to focus on the implants that we use and the other technical aspects of the procedure. However, the ability to improve outcomes by focusing on nutrition, particularly preoperative nutrition and perioperative nutritional management is an often underemphasized and overlooked area. With this Instructional Course Lecture, we can provide important information that can help each one of us optimize the outcomes of the surgery that we perform.

Joseph Zuckerman, MD FAAOS: orthopaedic procedures, You know, as orthoapedic surgeons, we tend to focus on anatomy implant selection, all the technical aspects of what we do. However, we should not overlook some of the intrinsic factors that affect healing that, that impact every patient and that's nutritional status. And it is particularly important in this era of cost containment because every aspect of what we do has a cost and if we can decrease complications, improve outcomes and reduce the need for additional care going forward, this will be viewed very positively. And with this Instructional Course Lecture, I think you will find that there are some simple steps that can be taken to optimize the patient status before surgery and during the recovery period, which will have a positive impact on their outcomes.

Joseph Zuckerman, MD FAAOS: I'd just like to say a few words about the AAOS Annual Meeting. I've been involved with the AAOS for many years. I served as the Chair of the Council on Education for six years, and I was fortunate enough to serve as AAOS President in 2009 to 2010. The AAOS Annual Meeting is the premier orthopaedic meeting in the world. It is the best educational opportunity for any orthopaedic surgeon to participate in regardless of your subspecialty area or regardless of your preferred method of learning, whether it be scientific papers, posters, exhibits, Instructional Course Lectures, interactive sessions, the videotapes that are available. There is something for everyone here. I've been attending the AAOS meeting for over 40 years and now I'm just as excited to be part of it as I was when I was 4th year resident at the University of Washington, attending my first meeting many years ago. So, I'm a great fan of the AAOS Annual Meeting, and I hope you are too.
