Speaker: Jose A. Taveras, MD, International & Annual Meeting Committees

Jose A. Taveras, MD: Hello. My name is Jose Tavaras. I'm an orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in hip and knee replacement. I am an international member to the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, a member of the International Committee and liaison to the Meeting Committee of the Academy. And I currently live and work in the Dominican Republic.

Jose A. Taveras, MD: It is very important that the Academy continue to provide Spanish content at the meetings. It's going to stimulate more participation from that large group of participants from Hispanic and Spanish speaking countries who feel that there's a limitation in the knowledge that they can acquire because of language. So, this is a great plus and directed to a large community that already participates in the meeting every year.

Jose A. Taveras, MD: In planning for these Spanish sessions. Many things were considered. Some of them include the topics. So we are going to have topics on hip fractures, hip replacement, shoulder, other sports themes. We also consider the speakers. And so we're having international speakers paired with U.S. speakers and I think that's going to afford great communication and information available to our participants. So we're really looking forward to the Spanish sessions.

Jose A. Taveras, MD: My advice for someone traveling internationally to the meeting for the first time is that you need to do your planning, you need to plan travel, you need to plan for visas, you need to plan for lodging. And I would recommend the Academy page that has plenty of information for you and, and will help you in that sense. Another thing is that you need to plan while at the meeting, your activities. It is a very large venue, there's a lot of educational activities and sometimes it's just difficult to, to navigate. And so one thing that I would highly recommend is the use of the mobile app that will be available to you and that has been prepared for you to be able to participate seamlessly throughout the meeting. So planning is the best advice that I can give you if you're coming for the first time.

Jose A. Taveras, MD: In regards to the Spanish sessions, I think this is something that we have been working on for a very long time and it is now a fact. And so I think that we are just going to improve on this. We've been doing this now for the second year. I think this year is going to be even better than last year and, that's just going to improve. So I want to just stimulate everyone to participate and not only participate listening to these talks, think about what you can offer the to the Academy in the future. So I think that everything looks really bright as far as the Spanish sessions is concerned. It's only going to get better.
