Speaker: Emma Tomes, Founder , The Mental Health People Ltd

Which activities or hobbies have had a positive impact on your mental health?

Emma Tomes: I think for me, the answer to this one has got to be our dogs. They make me laugh. they get me out of the house and they give really good cuddles. So, yeah, having having pets has really impacted my mental health in a positive way.

Are there any books, podcasts, or resources related to mental health that you've found valuable or insightful?

Emma Tomes: Yes. So for me, this one has got to be, a book which is called no bad parts. It's really shaped, how I view my own personal mental health and also how I work with clients.

Is there a particular person or support network that has played a significant role in supporting your mental health?

Emma Tomes: Yes, there is a particular person. Uh, this person is my husband. Not only do I live with him, we also work together as well, which most people would probably think is quite stressful. but he brings fun into my day so that that really helps with my mental health.

What would you say to other people who are experiencing poor mental health?

Emma Tomes: I'm trying to think back to when I was really poorly and, I was trying to think about what? What someone said to me, and they said, You know, you don't have to do this on your own. It might feel like you're on your own. It might feel like you're dealing with this all on your own, but actually, there is support out there. And that might be, picking up the phone and speaking to your employee assistance programme. That might be, phoning Samaritans, which has a very, special place in my heart. Or that might be that you have a mental health first aider in your organisation or a group of them and and just having a look at who might you feel comfortable reaching out? You don't have to tell them everything, but, you know, just sharing a little bit of of what might be going on for you might just ease that pressure a little bit.
