Speaker: Sarah Murphy, Evaluation Manager and Professional Learning Specialist

What do you hope teachers will take away from this course?

Sarah Murphy: Hi, I'm Sarah. I'm one of the course designers at Teaching channel. In course 5212, A Closer Look at Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia, teachers will learn the basics of three common specific learning disabilities. You'll begin by learning about how each affects students in different content areas. Dyslexia in reading, dysgraphia, in writing and dyscalculia in math. You'll learn the symptoms and signs of each of these specific learning disabilities as well as accommodations to best support students facing learning challenges. You'll learn how to use assistive technologies to support your students as well as how to create resources to share with colleagues and families so that they can support learners in their spaces as well.

What do you love about this course?

Sarah Murphy: I really love that. This course will prepare teachers to best support their students with dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia using research backed practices. I know that in my teacher preparation program, we really covered each of these learning disabilities at more of a surface level. And this course will help teachers have concrete strategies and approaches and understanding that they can use the next day in their classroom setting. Um one of my favorite applications in the course is 'Collaborate' and it asks participants to consult an expert. So that could be a special educator, an occupational therapist, a school psychologist, but also a family or a student, you know, depending on um the age of the student, if it's an older student, um a student facing one of these learning disabilities and really learn from the experts and bring that learning back to their classroom and their coursework.
