Speakers: Talley Wells, Executive Director, North Carolina Council on Developmental Disabilities

As a primary caretaker, at my passing, would NCCDD be a good resource for the person who will be making arrangements for him for housing?

Talley Wells: Hi everybody, this is tally wells and it's sunday afternoon and I am answering questions for the ask me anything. We are at the north Carolina Council on developmental disabilities. I am the executive director and today's question is as a primary caretaker at my passing would N. C. C. D. D be a good resource for the person who will be making arrangements for him for housing. This is a hard question. Housing is one of the greatest challenges we have for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in north Carolina and at the north Carolina Council on developmental disabilities. What we do is advocate for Systems change and educate policymakers and educate the intellectual developmental disability community. We don't actually provide services. We don't provide housing. We try to build the capacity within north Carolina through advocacy and education to make that happen. Um There are a number of groups right now in north Carolina that have a real interest in increasing housing. One of the main places that that is happening is through the Department of Health and Human Services. The Department of Health and Human Services has organized a strategic planning group around Housing. So you'll want to follow that, you can follow everything that's happening with respect to what's called Homestead, which is a U. S. Supreme Court decision that says people with disabilities have the right to live in the community as part of that. They're there. Um They've convened this housing group and they have a web page at the Department of Health and Human Services web page. So that's a good place to sort of follow what's happening. You can also be in conversation with your local L M E M C O L M E M C O. And you can find your local L M ME M C O by going to uh the L M E M C O Directory. You can google search for that and have a conversation with them about housing as well. Um We're going to continue to be working to develop more housing resources within north Carolina, but it's a real need right now. Also encourage you to start to develop relationships with other families and family members and guardians and caretakers, uh to continue to have this conversation. I know there's a group called passive P A C I. D. In the Raleigh Durham Chapel Hill area, that's thinking about housing. And there's a group in Winston Salem that started to think about housing. There's another organization in Chapel Hill that's thinking about housing. So encourage you to reach out and be have having conversations with um various advocacy groups that are, are really concerned about issues involving people with developmental disabilities including the north Carolina council and developmental disabilities. Thank you
